on saying goodbye

a poem

and then we’ll make promises

make plans to meet up and lie about it

and we’ll wave at each other one last time

as we go in the opposite direction

we’ll play a game of chicken

see who looks back first

see who looks back longer

see who is the one who will put in the effort

see who doesn’t

and maybe we’ll think about each other

until we’re no longer necessary plot devices

and maybe one of us will reach out years later

and maybe the phone number has changed

and they don’t live there anymore

and they can’t be reached

and you can reach the end of your life

you have a few visitors

and it feels like someone’s missing

but maybe that’s just me
